Oh, I never had in mind before to travel to
Italy….to Sicily (pardon) just before Christmas. I tell you it is worth trying.
How Sicilians can celebrate is just g r e a t. I have no idea how other cities do
but Palermo was full of poinsettias. Every single corner was full of them: the shop windows, hotels, restaurants, the
steps of the famous Teatro Massimo, where the “The Godfather” part 3 opera
scene was taken. (Buy tickets for any shows and enjoy an evening with
beautifully dressed Italians.)
As for a little art and architecture: don’t
miss the Martorana. This church (just like many more in Sicily) has multiple
styles as with the succession of centuries it was enriched with various tastes
in art and architecture. The construction of the church started in the 12th
century and later it was modified between the 16th and 18th
century. The spectacular interior is dominated by a series of mosaics executed
by Byzantine craftsmen in the 12th century. Similar mosaics can be
seen in the Cappella Palatina or in Monreale Cathedral. The frescoes in the
middle part are from the 18th century.
What I
also liked that the people were so relaxed, it was no Christmas rush in the
shops. Also light projections and a Christmas market made the days more
festive.
On the way to Sicily, Naples and the Mount
Vesuvius.
